about

Misplaced Moments is my ongoing series where I re-discover and share incomplete and imperfect songs with you because this is about you. Not me.

Well, that's not entirely true.

Isn't all art really just a vanity project?

Isn't it all to transport and transform us, the artist, somewhere or in some way? And then we go, "OH, the listener, the viewer...yes, yes..."

Case and point: The other day, I thought about how I hadn't worked on one of these albums in a while. I was feeling rather nostalgic. Things have been moving blazing fast over the last year (we bought and sold a home and found out recently we are expecting our first child!), so to wind down for a minute, I opened my file archive and started listening. As I downloaded each iPhone and Macbook GarageBand file - it transported me and made me remember: 2019 was a hell of a year.

My wife (then girlfriend of 5 years) and I got engaged. My Oma (RIP) turned 100. My band, Sweet Truth, was forming and breaking up almost simultaneously. As a matter of fact, some of the songs in the Spring here were demos for songs that we would have used...I even fucking "sing" in a couple (don't judge)!? My new band, Billy and the Bad Peach, formed in the summer and began playing in the fall (again, you might hear some of that in these demos.) Links to both of these band's albums on Wet Cassettes are below.

I was also unexpectedly laid off from a job I loved and then started a new job in Center City, Philadelphia. My daily commute went from a drive to a train ride. I became more "professional." I became City Nick. This is also probably was the last year I really stopped demoing so much music and started composing whole ideas- which will show, and I'll explain more in the 2020-2021 edition of this, coming whenever.

All in all, 2019 was pretty OK. The world hadn't fallen apart from COVID-19 yet, and I was still being pretty creative. I hope you enjoy the demos as much as I do, and maybe they'll transport you to a time a few years ago when things were, I don't know, better? Worse? Same? Too early to tell in the metaphysical pantheon of existence that we experience?

Again, for first-time listeners, the idea behind this collection of songs is that not much work was done for them. I titled them after the date that the original demo was recorded. The extra words after the date are meant to differentiate them from other Misplaced Moments songs that were written on the same day, in a different year. I chose these words by using notes I might or might not have made about the song in notebooks or in the song file name itself. Maybe one day I'll make a playlist to see which months I was most active across ___ years?

After that initial recording date, I probably never touched the song again unless a riff worked subconsciously into another project. Minimal overdubs. Bad mic placement. And the only step I take NOW is to bounce these with a slight mastering limiter- so that they are a listenable volume for you.

Thanks for listening and for your love.
